Colds & Flu

The differences between Cold & Flu

A cold is a milder respiratory illness than the flu. While cold symptoms can make you feel unwell for a few days, flu symptoms can make you feel quite ill with uncomfortable body aches for a few days or up to weeks. The flu can also result in serious health problems such as pneumonia.
Cold symptoms usually begin with a sore throat, which will commonly go away after a day or two. Runny nose and congestion follow, along with a cough from days 3 through 5. Fever is not common in adults. Children are more likely to have a fever with a cold.  Common symptoms include:

      - Sore throat                        - Cough                        - Runny or stuffy nose
      - Sneezing                          - Mild body aches          - Headache
      - Watery Eyes

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by influenza viruses. It is a seasonal virus and is spread through droplets when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. Flu symptoms can be mild to severe, and include:
       -
Heavy Cough                     -
Sore throat                - Runny or stuffy nose
       - Muscle or body aches         - Headache                  - Fatigue
       - Fever and/or Chills

Young children, adults 65+, pregnant women and people with certain chronic illnesses are all at a higher risk of developing serious complications. The best way to protect ourselves, and those more vulnerable, from the flu, is to get an annual flu shot!

If a patient is diagnosed at CW with the flu, our providers will offer and prescribe antiviral medication proven to lessen the severity and duration of your illness. When taken promptly, antivirals can reduce the time you are sick by 1-2 days, ease symptoms, and prevent serious complications, such as pneumonia.

Strep & Sore Throat

Diagnosing if throat soreness is an indication of simple sore throat or a strep throat is a procedure that is easily accomplished by our medical professionals at Citywide. We have provided a brief guide to the differences in symptoms between these two very distinct conditions.

Recognizing the Differences Between Strep and Sore Throat

Strep throat is caused by an infection of streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat spreads by having contact with an infected person's saliva or nasal secretions. Although strep throat is more common in children ages 5 to 15, it also occurs in adults. To diagnose strep throat, CW can check a rapid strep test or, if necessary, send a throat swab to the lab for a culture.

Symptoms associated with Strep Throat:

     - Sudden sore throat                    - Swollen lymph nodes
      -  Loss of appetite                                - Red tonsils with white spots
      -  Painful swallowing                           - Fever

Sore throats can be caused by viruses or bacteria. The most common cause of sore throats is viruses. Viral sore throats are often accompanied by other cold symptoms. Other causes of sore throat include smoking, pollution or irritants in the air, allergies, and dry air.

Symptoms associated with Sore Throat(which can commonly accompany a cold):
      - Runny nose                              - Sneezing
      - Watery eyes                             - Low Fever (below 101)
      - Cough

Come to Citywide Urgent Care for Fast Diagnosis & Treatment

If you or your child is suffering from any symptoms that may indicate strep, it’s important to see a medical provider. Untreated strep throat can cause serious complications such as kidney inflammation and rheumatic fever.

If you are worried about strep throat, simply come to Citywide. We are open 7 days a week and offer on-site strep testing. A provider can perform a physical exam and run a simple rapid antigen test to detect strep bacteria. He or she will swab your throat and test the swab to see if any antigens are present, with results available in just a few minutes.

If the test is positive, we can prescribe a course of antibiotics to fight the infection. Antibiotics can lessen the severity of your symptoms and prevent spreading the illness to others. With treatment, you should start to feel better within 1-2 days and fully recover within a week or so.

High Fever

A fever is one way that the body defends itself against
infections, and it can be effective. However, in some
cases, the fever itself can become troublesome.
Very high fevers should be treated as an emergency condition, but even moderate fevers can make you feel miserable enough that you might seek out professional medical attention.

At Citywide, we can help you recover by providing caring, professional treatment for your fever.

Treatment
Our providers won’t just treat the fever; they’ll also check
to see what underlying condition might have triggered your body’s defenses.

For fevers caused by colds or flu, which are viral
infections, we can give advice for managing symptoms;
for fevers resulting from bacterial infections, we can prescribe medications to help fight off the infection itself.

If you need treatment for a high fever, walk into Citywide, open 7 days a week. You can also contact us for further information and reserve your time online to help streamline your visit.

Repsiriatory Conditions

Severe Cough

Coughing is the body’s way of removing foreign material
or mucus from the lungs and upper airway passages or of reacting to an irritated airway. Coughs have distinctive
traits that can be recognized. A cough is only a symptom, not a disease, and often the importance of your cough can be determined only when other symptoms are evaluated
by a Doctor or Provider.

Productive Coughs

A productive cough produces phlegm or mucus (sputum). The mucus may have drained down the back of the throat from the nose or sinuses or may have come up from the lungs. A productive cough generally should not be suppressed; it clears mucus from the lungs. Productive coughs can be caused for a variety of reasons, such as: viral illnesses, infections, chronic lung disease, smoking and others.

Non-Productive Coughs

A nonproductive cough is dry and does not produce
sputum. A dry, hacking cough may develop towards the
end of a cold or after exposure to an irritant, such as dust
or smoke. There are many causes of non-productive coughs: viral illnesses, allergies, medications, asthma,
and others

Come to Citywide Urgent Care to receive proper diagnosis and treatment for your cough.

Pneumonia & Bronchitis

Pneumonia is a respiratory infection that affects the lungs. It is a fairly common illness that may affect just one lobe, the whole lung, or both lungs.

Most of the time, pneumonia is caused by a bacterial infection, but it can also be caused by a virus, fungus, or parasite. The infection causes inflammation in the lungs and causes the air sacs within the lungs – the alveoli – to fill with fluid or mucus. This fluid makes it difficult to breathe and limits the amount of oxygen the lungs can take in.
Pneumonia symptoms include:
   - Chest pain         - Fatigue       - Shortness of breath           - Fever, shaking, and swearing chills
   - Cough, which may be productive
   - Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes,
which carry air to your lungs. There are two types of bronchitis: acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis is common and can be brought on by a cold or other virus.

Chronic bronchitis, however, is a constant inflammation of the bronchial tubes, usually caused by smoking. Bronchitis is considered chronic when it lasts at least three months, with recurring bouts of coughing that happen for at least
two years in a row.

Bronchitis symptoms include:
   - Cough                  - Shortness of breath
   - Mucus present when coughing  - Slight fever and chills
   - Fatigue                 - Sore chest

Asthma

Treatment for Mild to Moderate Asthma Symptoms

When asthma problems aren’t severe enough to need emergency intervention but are too severe to treat at home, Citywide Urgent Care is here to help.

Asthma treatment measures vary widely based on the severity of a given attack. Mild asthma flare-ups can
require as little as a rescue inhaler, while some asthma atta
cks may require emergency room treatment followed
by further observation.

Common symptoms of an asthma attack include:
   - Wheezing    - Tightness in the chest    - Coughing             - Difficultly catching breath

If an individual experiences any of the above symptoms, they should utilize their rescue inhaler and seek medical treatment immediately if symptoms do not subside.

Coughing is the body’s way of removing foreign material or mucus from the lungs and upper airway passages or of reacting to an irritated airway. Coughs have distinctive traits that can be recognized. A cough is only a symptom, not a disease, and often the importance of your cough can be determined only when other symptoms are evaluated by a Doctor or Provider.

A nonproductive cough is dry and does not produce sputum. A dry, hacking cough may develop toward the end of a cold or after exposure to an irritant, such as dust or smoke. There are many causes of non-productive coughs: viral illnesses, allergies, medications, asthma, and others

     - Chest pain                                              - Fatique
     - Shortness of breath                                 - Fever, shaking, and swearing chills
     - Cough, which may be productive              - Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to your lungs. There are two types of bronchitis: acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis is common and usually is brought on by a cold or other virus. After you’ve been treated for acute bronchitis, you may have a lingering cough for several weeks.

Chronic bronchitis, however, is a constant inflammation of the bronchial tubes, usually caused by smoking. Bronchitis is considered chronic when it lasts at least three months, with recurring bouts of coughing that happen for at least two years in a row.
Bronchitis symptoms include:
      - Cough                                                     - Shortness of breath
      - Mucus present when coughing                  - Slight fever and chills
      - Fatigue                                                    - Sore chest

Asthma

Treatment for Mild to Moderate Asthma Symptoms

When asthma problems aren’t severe enough to need emergency intervention but are too severe to treat at home, Citywide Urgent Care is here to help.

Asthma treatment measures vary widely based on the severity of a given attack. Mild asthma flare-ups can require as little as a rescue inhaler, while some asthma attacks may require emergency room treatment followed by further observation.

Common symptoms of an asthma attack include:
      - Wheezing                                                  - Tightness in the chest
      - Coughing                                                   - Difficultly catching breath
      - Difficulty catching breath

If an individual experiences any of the above symptoms, they should utilize their rescue inhaler and seek medical treatment immediately if symptoms do not subside.

Eye and Ear Infections

Eye infections are often difficult to self-diagnose the cause.Infections can come in three forms: bacterial, viral and fungal. The symptoms are similar for all, and without proper treatment, can worsen quickly and lead to the high cost of emergency room bills.

Any of these symptoms can sometimes be very serious. Here is a breakdown of what an eye infection looks like and when you should see a provider urgently.

Having just one or two of these symptoms can indicate an infection, but if you notice more than one of them or if they get worse as the days go by, it might be time to call us at CWUC.

 Severe Symptoms

   - Swelling in the area around the eyes                  - Pain
      -
Blurry vision                                                         - Extreme Light sensitivity
      - Eye discharge                                                      - Feeling of a foreign object in eye

Milder Symptoms

 - Itching                                                                 - Constant involuntary blinking
       - Watery or dry eyes                                              - Red Eyes
       -

Ear infections, or otitis, occur when fluid builds up in the middle ear. At Citywide, we can provide convenient and effective treatment for ear infections for both children and adults. Symptoms of an ear infection can include:

Symptoms
Ear infections are common in children, and an earache is typically the first symptom. Kids will often act irritated, tug at their ears or express pain in their ears, and an ear infection may also be accompanied by a fever. Here are some additional symptoms:

  • Pain or discomfort inside the ear
  • Feeling of pressure inside the ear
  • Thick, yellow fluid coming from the ears
  • Hearing loss

Our healthcare provider will determine the proper course of treatment based upon a patient’s age and other factors.  Depending on the type and severity of infection, he or she may prescribe ibuprofen for pain management, or antibiotics may be necessary.

While most mild ear infections resolve without treatment, finding relief can be obtained by simply visiting Citywide. You can walk-in 7 days or reserve your time online.

Different types of Headaches

There are many causes of headaches. However, they can be categorized into three main types; Sinus, Tension and finally, Migraines, which can result in severe and extended pain.

Tension Headaches
Tension or stress headaches are the most common type of headache for adults. The pain involved is dull and aching, and can range from mild to moderate. Sprains

Sprains can result from a twist, pull, or tear of a muscle or tendon (connective tissue from muscle to bone), caused by overstretching or over contraction. Strains can be mild to severe, which if not treated professionally, can cause damage and loss of functionality.  Strain symptoms: pain, muscle spasm, loss of strength.

Acute Injuries

Bruises / Contusions

A bruise, also called a contusion, is a common injury resulting from damage to the small blood vessels beneath the skin. When the blood leaks out and collects near the surface, the skin becomes discolored.

When to See a Doctor for a Bruise

Most bruises are minor. If you’ve bumped into something and have a bruise, you probably don’t need medical treatment. Your body will naturally heal and reabsorb the blood.

However, you should talk to a doctor if your bruise doesn’t improve after 10 days - two weeks, or if you often bruise easily or without an explanation.

Bruises can also accompany other injuries that do require treatment, such as sprains and broken bones. In these cases, your medical provider can give you directions about how to alleviate swelling and bruising as part of your treatment. Citywide Urgent Care can help by treating your bruises and the underlying causes. Appointments and walk-ins are accepted 7 days a week.

Minor Burns

A burn, even a minor one, can cause a great amount of pain and also do lasting damage if left untreated. At Citywide, we offer treatment for burns that is available to our patients when they need it. We are open 7 days/eves. We offer immediate treatment for 1st and 2nd degree burns from medical professionals to evaluate pain and discomfort and lead to fast recovery. If you have a skin burn from cooking or chemicals, it’s important that you know when to get professional medical care. Burns range in severity from first degree to third, and treatment varies for each type.

First-Degree Burns –– This is the least serious burn in which only the outer layer of skin is burned. First-degree burns can be caused by sunburn, scalding your skin with hot liquid or by coming in contact with electricity. Although some first-degree burns can be treated at home, if the affected area shows any signs of infection or becomes swollen or painful, you or any children should come in to Citywide.

Second-Degree Burns –– A second-degree burn occurs when the skin has been burned through the first and second layers. This type of burn is very painful and causes swelling, redness and blisters. A second-degree burn requires immediate medical attention.

Third-Degree Burns –– When a burn affects the outer layer of skin, as well as deeper skin layers and the organs below the skin, it is classified as a third-degree burn. In this case, the skin will appear to be black and white and charred. Even though this burn may have less pain (because of the nerve damage), it is crucial that you go to a hospital for treatment.

Heel Pain / Platar Faciitis

The most common causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis (bottom of the heel) and Achilles tendinitis (back of the heel). There are additional causes that are much less prominent as well. If you are experiencing severe heel pain anytime or minor pain/discomfort for more than 2-3 days, Citywide will diagnose the cause and offer treatment to relieve your pain as quickly as possible.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most commonly experienced foot afflictions. A common symptom is feet that hurt where the arch meets the heel, and it's often worse in the morning or when getting back on your feet after long periods of rest. It might ease up once you are active, but then it will gradually worsen during the day. It's common among older adults, in runners and people who spend long hours on their feet or carry heavy loads.

Plantar fasciitis gets its name from the affected area of the body: the plantar fascia ligament. It's a thick band of tissue that spans from your heel to your toes, supporting your foot's natural arch and carrying the load of your regular activity. Repetitive strain and stress on this ligament without proper support can cause damage to the ligament, resulting in this painful condition. There are a few options that Citywide providers can provide to ease your pain and reduce inflammation in your foot.

We will usually recommend you try a few therapies at home and/ often provide a effective orthopedic grade support worn while at rest or when sleeping, to provide relief and aid you in your  recovery. Come to Citywide today and we will prescribe the best possible treatment for you.

We are open for your walk-in physical exam at your convenience - weekdays, weekends, and evenings, so you can bring your children and teens in for school, camp, and sports physicals. Sports Physicals

A sports physical is not the same as a regular physical; a sports physical assesses the health and fitness of an individual in relation to a particular sport they want to play. A physical examination by a physician is required for high school athletics in New York.

A sports physical is often called a pre-participation physical. The athlete is examined to identify any high-risk disorder or condition that might affect an athlete’s ability to safely play. The purpose of a sports physical is to gain an understanding of the following factors:

  • Medical history
  • Physical maturity
  • Any existing injuries
  • Current fitness level
  • Conditions that might increase risk of injury

Auto Accidents

If your condition isn't life-threatening but should still be checked out, it is advisable to see Citywide Urgent Care. Many injuries from a car accident can seem minor. However, with your adrenaline revved up, you may not actually be as good as you feel.
A few reasons to consider coming to CWUC after a minor accident:

1. Discovering Hidden Injuries
When you’re in a car accident, your adrenaline kicks in, which can delay feeling pain from an injury. Being checked thoroughly can be very important as soon as possible. It’s common for people to have injuries they don’t feel until hours or days after their accident. We can treat these injuries before they get worse.

2. Legal Documentation/Medical History
Having documentation of your injuries is a matter of practicality. Medical bills can ruin any financial security you have if you can’t get a responsible party to resolve them. The longer you wait, the more legal hurdles you could face. Taking a medical exam should be part of any post-accident checklist.
.3. Concussion Risk
On top of the risk of unknown injuries like sprains or strains, it’s most important to find out if you have a head injury. Concussions are common with even minor car accidents, and they’re easy to treat. If you don’t catch them, though, they can lead to serious problems. Checking for concussion is common practice for anyone who was in a car accident at Citywide. We have the equipment to make sure your brain is safe.

   - Sore throat         - Cough        - Runny/stuffy nose

Recognizing the Differences Between
Strep and Sore Throat

Symptoms associated with Sore Throat (which can commonly accompany a cold):
      - Runny nose                        - Sneezing
      - Watery eyes                       - Low Fever (below 101)
      - Cough

Come to Citywide Urgent Care for Fast Diagnosis & Treatment

If you or your child is suffering from any symptoms that
may indicate strep, it’s important to see a medical provider. Untreated strep throat can cause serious complications such as kidney inflammation and rheumatic fever.

If you are worried about strep throat, come to Citywide.

We offer on-site strep testing.

For fevers caused by colds or flu, which are viral
infections, we can give advice for managing symptoms;
for fevers resulting from bacterial infections, we can prescribe medications to help fight off the infection itself.

Productive coughs can be caused for a variety of reasons, such as:
viral illnesses, infections, chronic lung disease, smoking
and others.

Non-Productive Coughs

A nonproductive cough is dry and does not produce
sputum. A dry, hacking cough may develop towards the
end of a cold or after exposure to an irritant, such as dust
or smoke. There are many causes of non-productive coughs: viral illnesses, allergies, medications, asthma,
and others.

Mild asthma flare-ups can
require as little as a rescue inhaler, while some asthma attacks may require emergency room treatment followed
by further observation.

Common symptoms of an asthma attack include:
   - Wheezing             - Tightness in the chest
   - Coughing             - Difficultly catching breath
If an individual experiences any of the above symptoms, they should utilize their rescue inhaler and seek medical treatment immediately if symptoms do not subside.

Urinary Tract Infections

Our medical professionals at Citywide Urgent Care  routinely treat UTIs. When you have symptoms and are in pain, we will typically perform a urine test, to determine if you do indeed have a UTI. We will review urine cultures and ensure we prescribe, if necessary, the best course and type of antibiotic treatment for you.

UTIs, while painful, are not life-threatening, especially if caught and treated early. Visiting Citywide for UTIs will be much faster and typically costs far less than an emergency room, and may also be covered by your health insurance.

   - Blurry vision                  - Extreme Light sensitivity
   - Eye discharge               - Feeling of a foreign object in eye

Milder Symptoms

 - Itching                           - Constant involuntary blinking
    - Watery or dry eyes      - Red Eyes

Our healthcare provider will determine the proper course
of treatment based upon a patient’s age and other factors.  Depending on the type and severity of infection, he or she may prescribe ibuprofen for pain management, or antibiotics may be necessary.

While most mild ear infections resolve without treatment, finding relief can be obtained by simply visiting Citywide. You can walk-in 7 days or reserve your time online.

Headaches & Migraines

Headaches
We tend to think of headaches as a common malady affecting many of us and with some they occur far too often. There is no need to accept the pain as a part of life and you should look for relief, and at Citywide Urgent Care we can provide that for you.

Different types of Headaches

There are many causes of headaches. However, they can be categorized into three main types; Sinus, Tension and finally, Migraines, which can result in severe and extended pain.
Sinus Headaches

A sinus headache causes pain and pressure in the face, as well as congestion and fatigue. Some people that assume they have this type of headache may actually be experiencing tension or even a migraine. Conferring with our medical professionals is important so you can ensure proper treatment.

Tension Headaches
Tension or stress headaches are the most common type of headache for adults. The pain involved is dull and aching, and can range from mild to moderate. We can help stop a tension headache with either over the counter or prescription medications such as pain-relievers, combination medications, or triptans.

Migraines
Migraines are severe, throbbing headaches that often occur on one side of the head. Symptoms include muscle tension, nausea, and vomiting and increased sensitivity to light and sound.

The providers at Citywide can help stop your migraine headache with acute treatment and migraine medication.

You will have a short wait at most, and you’ll have your results as quickly as possible. We’ll treat your illness and refer you to a specialist if needed.

Symptoms of STDs in Women

In women, symptoms of common STDs may include pain or burning during urination, abnormal vaginal discharge, bloody vaginal discharge, pain in the abdomen, spotting, itching, blisters, fever, swollen glands, open sores, and warts. Some STDs, like chlamydia, and gonorrhea cause no symptoms. If your sexual partner has been diagnosed with an STD, testing yourself is vital to prevent complications such as infertility and certain types of cancer.

Symptoms of STDs in Men

Men with STDs may experience discharge from the urethra, pain during urination, inflammation of the testicles or prostate, fever, or sores. Untreated STDs put you at risk for organ failure, infertility, and even brain damage. If you have an STD, your sexual partners are at risk of transmission, so the only way to protect them is to refrain from sexual activity until diagnosis and treatment are completed.
